Background on the Bills!

Posted about 7 years ago by Brian Goodroad

Hello MN APRN Coalition Members,

We wanted to give you a bit of background on the signature recognition bills that are currently at the capital. As you may recall from our previous message, we first planned to go with a more general signature recognition bill allowing APRN's during their daily practice to sign any form that would be required for care or sometimes might be noted as “physician signature”. For issues of clarity and transparency, we ended up with a bill that identifies the specific Minnesota Statutes where the phrase,  “... or Advanced Practice Nurse, or Physician Assistant” has been added after the word physician.

Given this new direction we needed to move, and the time crunch to get a bill going, we needed to limit ourselves to statutes currently under the purview of Health and Human Services. They had the most statutes that we reviewed. We also included specific verbiage to allow NPs and PAs to sign death certificates. We plan to come back next session with bills to cover the remainder of the statutes.

Our bill in the senate is SF 1844 and our bill in the house is HF 2177. Please stay tuned for more information as we proceed through this process in the next few weeks. Please review these bills at the MN Legislature web site at Click Here.  Please let us know if you have questions as well.  We may need your help and will communicate with your through our organization site.

Thanks,

MN APRN Coalition Board

Hello Dr. Lathrop! Thank you for your question. There are a number of specific statutes in MN legislation in which the language states a physician needs to send a letter or something similar. These are varied aspects of care from signing death certificates to verifying illness for medical assistance programs. All the specifics can be found in the bill copies which you can click on the link above and put in the number. That is so fantastic that you are going to the District DFL convention! Way to be active!!!! Good work!
